BEGINNING MAH JONGG

​Facilitators:  Vickie Dycewicz, Peggy Calhoun

Mah Jongg is a tile-based game developed in the 19th century in China. It is commonly played by four players with a set of 152 tiles (American version) based on Chinese characters and symbols. This entry level class will introduce participants to this fascinating game of skill, strategy, and

luck.

Fee: $15 National Mah Jongg League, Inc. 88th Year card (unless students have their own card).

OLD DILLON:  MEMORIES IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR

Facilitator:  Robin Bremner

This course will offer a brief history of Dillon, looking at the people, the mountain setting, the ski industry and recreation in the area, all of which changed life in Colorado. Participants will learn why there is a Lake Dillon and what led

to the relocation of the town. Robin, an educator who grew up in the community that is now under the lake, will share how life used to be.  Her father was the mayor of New Dillon in the 1960s and president of the Dillon Development Committee as the old town moved to a new ocation.

CLASSIC COMEDY FILMS

Facilitator:  Peter Livshin

In this course, participants review and discuss six films, identifying traits that make them classics. The movies are

EUCHRE FOR BEGINNERS

Facilitator:  Ron Adams

Euchre is a beloved, quick-moving card game that anyone can learn

quickly and enjoy.  Each hand only has five cards per person and all players have to do is win three.  German-speaking immigrants brought the game to America in the 19th Century, and it quickly gained popularity, becoming widely regarded as the national card game.  Ron and his wife Melinda have been playing Euchre since college days.

WHY SITCOMS REIGN SUPREME

Facilitator:  Sheryl Hutchings

This course will explore the generational development and popularity of the "sitcom," the cornerstone of Western television entertainment since its inception nearly 80 years ago.  The evolution pf the sitcom in many ways reflects major changes and shifts in American culture while still delivering laughs.  The class will seek to answer why this genre, though often undervalued and under appreciated, has survived and prospered.

FELT FLOWERS

Facilitator:  Vickie Pervich

Learn how to make the popular felt flowers and leaves to be used in a

finished project of your choice. The four types of flowers covered in the course are rolled, petal to petal, folded, and flat. Patterns will be provided.

Fee: A supply list will be emailed before the first class. Individuals willprobably have most of the necessary supplies, but those without any supplies may spend $30-$40.

EASY HIKES CLOSE

TO HEB

Facilitator:  Multiple Presenters

Fall is the perfect season to go outside and enjoy Colorado. Following an introductory first classroom session, avid HEB hikers will serve as guides on four easy hikes within an hour of HEB including Piney Creek Trail (Centennial), Paint Mines Interpretive Center (Calhan),  and Staunton State Park (Jeffco). Participants are

responsible for their own entry fees.

MAGIC WORKSHOP

Facilitator:  Russ Randall with Multiple Presenters

Magic entices and entertains all ages as it creates illusions. Participants in this class will learn simple magic tricks that can easily be taught to grandchildren. The class will have fun learning secrets behind the creation of magic using common household items (e.g. paper clips, rubber bands,

playing cards, etc.).  For years the presenters have been entertaining friendswith magic tricks. 

THE FAT MAN,

THE LITTLE BOY,

AND THE FALL OF JAPAN

Faciltator:  Harvey Solomon

This course is about the making and use of the Atomic Bomb to end WWII.  It covers the US Manhattan Project, bomb projects in other nations and ends with the fall of Japan. Harvey, a scientist and a scholar with a 75-year interest in history, is a scientist and historian who has taught many CAL courses.

MUSIC POTPOURRI

CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Facilitator:  Wayne Gardner

This course will cover musical genres such as rock, pop, blues, country, and folk by listening to many great vocal and guitar performances and by hearing stories about artists and songs. Participants will also learn about how the human voice works and how technology can change the sound of the voice. Wayne is a musician with a lifelong passion for music. He facilitated years of music classes at OLLI.

TRAILBLAZING WOMEN ON U.S. QUARTERS

Faciltator:  Mary Foglesong with Multiple Presenters

This course includes the stories of ten American women featured on the 2024/2025 US Mint's American Women on US Quarters series. Multiple presenters will share the inspirational accomplishments of such Trailblazers as Dr. Mary Edwards Walker (Civil War surgeon), Stacey Park Milbern (activist for people with disabilities), and Celia Cruz (Latin artist). Each of

the ten women in the series is most deserving of having her face shone on a US quarter.

IS THERE A BOOK IN YOU?

Facilitator:  Judith Briles

This course is designed for the aspiring authors of fiction or nonfiction wanting to get

started on their journey of publishing their work. Judith will take the class through a step-by-step process all the way to the final product in publishing.  Participants will take away e tips and strategies for publishing their book in

today's changing publishing world.

Judith has authored 48 books and has been awarded over 60 book awards.  She has sold over 1 million copies and has worked with thousands of aspiring authors to achieve their publishing dreams.

Fee: $10 for workbook.

VIETNAM HELICOPTER TO CONTINENTAL 737

Facilitator:  Bob Hartley

Follow Bob from flight school to his tour in Vietnam, including his experiences with what helicopters did during that war.  The group will learn what Bob did after his military service as he flew helicopters for construction, the forest service work in fighting fires and counting wild game, and more. Bob spent 22 years flying for Continental Airlines on the Boeing 737and will talk about older generation aircraft where everything was hand flown with very little technology to today’s modern aircraft with high-tech equipment.

SPORTS FORUM

Facilitator:  Peter Livshin

Class participants will discuss current events in the baseball and football world.  Peter is an educator who has presented several sports courses for CAL.  He has been a baseball and football fan since he was five years old, so he has lots of stories to share.

HOME TOUR:

REMARKABLE RENOVATIONS!

Faciltator:  Multiple Presenters

Those who are into HGTV or looking to do some renovations to their

homes will find that this is the course for them. Participants will have a chance to tour some remarkable renovations and chat with the homeowners in our HEB neighborhood who have pulled them off.

In this era of "fake news" and dissatisfaction with the news media, this class will provide an interactive forum in which to talk about how new stories are pursued, verified, and green lit for print or broadcast publication.
